RESUMO A técnica de água verde utiliza microalgas na água durante a larvicultura indoor, proporcionando um ambiente mais escuro que favorece o crescimento, bem-estar e saúde dos peixes. Avaliamos o crescimento e a atividade locomotora após exposição à luz de larvas de pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) criadas em água verde ou clara. Em um teste, larvas de pirarucu (3,6 ± 0,3 cm; 0,36 ± 0,1 g) foram criadas em tanques circulares de 50 L (n = 3 por tratamento; 50 larvas por tanque) em sistema estático contendo água verde [microalgas (w3algae; Bernaqua® 10 g m-3) adicionadas] ou água clara (controle). A transição alimentar dos peixes ocorreu por co-alimentação com náuplios de Artemia e microdieta por sete dias até a substituição completa pela microdieta. A biometria das larvas foi avaliada nos dias 10, 17 e 24, para avaliar o crescimento. Um segundo teste avaliou a atividade locomotora das larvas antes e após exposição à luz (1.400 ± 60,47 lx) por 48 horas usando um etograma. Após 24 dias, os peixes criados em água verde pesaram significativamente mais que os da água clara, e apresentaram significativamente menos movimentos circulares de natação. A exposição à luz aumentou o cortisol corporal nos dois grupos depois da exposição à luz. O nível corporal de cortisol aumentou em ambos grupos após exposição à luz. As microalgas forneceram uma fonte adicional de alimento para as larvas, com impacto positivo sobre seu crescimento até o 17º dia de larvicultura. Água verde pode ser uma estratégia para obter melhores resultados na larvicultura de pirarucu, principalmente durante e até 10 dias após o período de co-alimentação.

ABSTRACT The green water technique uses microalgae in the water of indoor larviculture, providing a darker environment to favor fish growth, welfare and health. We evaluated growth performance and locomotor activity after light exposure of pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) larvae reared in green or clear water. During one test, pirarucu larvae (3.6 ± 0.3 cm; 0.36 ± 0.1 g) were reared in 50-L circular tanks (n = 3 per treatment, 50 larvae per tank) in a static system containing green water [microalgae (w3algae; Bernaqua® 10 g m-3) added] or clear water (control). Fish weaning was achieved by co-feeding with Artemia nauplii and microdiets for seven days until full microdiet substitution. Larvae were biometrically evaluated on days 10, 17 and 24 to assess growth performance. In a second test, the locomotor activity of the larvae was analyzed before and after light exposure (1400 ± 60 lx) for 48 h according to an ethogram. After 24 days, the larvae reared in the green water were significantly heavier than those from the clear water, and displayed significantly fewer circular swimming movements. Body cortisol increased in both groups after light exposure. The microalgae provided an additional food source for larvae, with positive impact on growth until day 17 of larviculture. Green water can be a strategy to achieve better results in pirarucu larviculture, especially during and up to 10 days after the co-feeding period.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant potential of citric acid in plant protein based-diets offered to juvenile tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum. Four isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets containing different levels of citric acid (0, 10, 20, and 30 g.kg−1) were formulated. Fish (n = 160; 27.56±1.03 g) were randomly distributed in 310-L water tanks (n = 16), with four replicates per treatment. After the experimental period (80 days), animals were anesthetized, and blood was collected for cell count. They were euthanized and dissected to remove livers for subsequent oxidative stress analyses. No significant differences were observed in the levels of thrombocytes, total leukocytes, lymphocytes, positive granular leukocytes, and immature leukocytes among the experimental treatments. However, there were fewer monocytes and neutrophils in fish fed the diet containing 30 g.kg−1 of citric acid. All citric acid diets increased glutathione concentration and reduced lipid peroxidation levels in livers. Therefore, citric acid acts as a potent antioxidant in juvenile tambaqui fed plant protein-based diets and, thus, can improve their maintenance conditions in production systems.

RESUMO Brycon amazonicus é um peixe nativo da Amazônia que apresenta importância para a aquicultura na América do Sul. Em sistemas de criação intensiva, a mortalidade é alta nessa espécie devido à agressividade entre as larvas. O objetivo deste estudo foi testar se o tamanho diferencial entre indivíduos afeta o comportamento agressivo e a sobrevivência de B. amazonicus durante os estágios iniciais do desenvolvimento larval. Dois tratamentos (grupos de larvas com tamanho homogêneo e heterogêneo) foram avaliados ao longo do desenvolvimento larval em seis pontos de observação: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 e 72 horas pós-eclosão (HPE). Em dois experimentos foram quantificadas, respectivamente, as interações agressivas e a mortalidade em cada ponto de observação. A frequência das interações agressivas exibidas pelas larvas menos agressivas foi maior no tratamento de tamanho homogêneo. A agressividade também foi maior às 12 HPE, diminuiu nos períodos intermediários e aumentou novamente às 72 HPE. A taxa de mortalidade aumentou ao longo dos estágios larvais, sendo observada maior mortalidade total nos grupos de tamanho homogêneo. Os resultados deste estudo indicam que a agressividade em B. amazonicus é modulada pela variação do tamanho dos indivíduos e pelo estágio de desenvolvimento das larvas. O conhecimento sobre o comportamento de larvas é importante para desenvolver medidas que melhorem a saúde e a sobrevivência em sistemas de produção intensiva para esta espécie.

ABSTRACT Brycon amazonicus is a native Amazonian fish that is important for aquaculture in South America. Larval mortality is high in this species in intensive breeding systems due to aggressiveness among larvae. The present study investigated experimentally the effects of body size heterogeneity on the aggressive behavior and survival of B. amazonicus during the early stages of larval development. Two treatments (larvae groups with homogeneous and heterogeneous body size) were evaluated throughout early larval stages tested at six time points: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 hours after hatching (HAH). Two experiments quantified, respectively, aggressive interactions and mortality rates among larvae at each time point. The frequency of aggressive interactions exhibited by the less aggressive larvae in each replicate was higher in the homogeneous size treatment. Aggressiveness was higher at 12 HAH, decreasing thereafter, and increasing again at 72 HAH. The mortality rate significantly increased with the larval stage, and was higher in the homogeneous than in the heterogeneous sized groups. Our results showed that aggressiveness in B. amazonicus larvae is affected by size variability and larval development stage. This knowledge about larval behavior is important to develop measures to improve larval health and survival in intensive production systems for this species.
